Laser welding accuracy can usually reach a high level, and the size of the solder joint and heat affected zone can also be controlled. The following is a specific introduction:

Laser welding accuracy

Laser welding precision can generally reach below 0.1 millimeter. In advanced applications, such as microelectronics packaging, the spot diameter can be controlled to be as small as several tens of micrometers or even smaller through the use of optical focusing systems and other technologies.

Control of Weld Spot Size

The size of the weld spot can be controlled through the following methods:
  • Adjusting Laser Power: Increasing the laser power typically results in a larger weld spot, while reducing the power leads to a smaller spot. For example, welding when thicker materials, it is necessary to increase the power to obtain a larger weld spot to ensure joint strength.
  • Controlling Welding Speed: Faster welding speeds result in smaller weld spots, while slower speeds produce larger spots. When welding thin sheets at high speeds, smaller weld spots can be achieved to meet the requirements for fine connections.
  • Adjusting Focus: A shorter focal length makes the laser beam more concentrated, resulting in a smaller weld spot. A longer focal length is suitable for larger weld spots to accommodate positioning errors.
  • Using Auxiliary Gas: Properly adjusting the flow rate of auxiliary gases (such as nitrogen or argon) can protect the welding area from and oxidation help control the size of the weld spot.

Control of Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ)

The heat-affected zone can be controlled by taking the following measures:
  • Optimizing Laser Parameters: Using low-power, high-frequency pulsed lasers can reduce heat input and minimize the heat-affected zone. This approach is particularly useful when welding electronic precision components to prevent damage from overheating.
  • Increasing Welding Speed: Within the limits of ensuring weld seam quality, increasing the welding speed can reduce the heating time of the welding area, thereby reducing the size of the heat-affected zone.
  • Implementing Temperature Control: Using a closed-loop control system to monitor the weld spot temperature and adjust the laser power in time real can keep the temperature within an ideal range, preventing excessive heat accumulation that could expand the heat-affected zone.
