Laser welding, as an advanced welding technology, has many advantages, but there are also some disadvantages. The following are the advantages and disadvantages of laser welding:

Advantages of laser welding

High precision: The laser welding machine uses laser beam welding, which has high welding accuracy and can achieve welding of small parts.

High efficiency: Laser welding machines work quickly and generally only take a few seconds to complete welding.

Less polishing after welding: Due to the concentration of heat in laser welding, the heat affected area during the welding process is small, resulting in less polishing required after welding.

Fast welding speed: Laser welding is fast and can greatly improve production efficiency.

Stable heat output: Laser welding machines can maintain stable heat output during the welding process, making them particularly suitable for welding thin plate materials.

Reduce rework rate: Due to the high quality of laser welding, it can significantly reduce rework rate, improve production efficiency, and reduce costs.

Improving welding quality and weld bead aesthetics: Laser welding can achieve high-quality welding, with smooth and beautiful welds that usually do not require additional processing.

Improve automation level: Laser welding machines can achieve fully automated operation, reduce manual intervention, and improve production efficiency.

Disadvantages of laser welding

Require high assembly accuracy of welded parts: Laser welding requires high assembly accuracy of welded parts, and the position of the beam on the workpiece must not have significant deviation. This is because after laser focusing, the spot size is small and the weld seam is narrow, which requires the addition of filler metal material. If the assembly accuracy or beam positioning accuracy of the workpiece does not meet the requirements, it is easy to cause welding defects.

The cost of lasers and their related systems is relatively high: the cost of lasers and their related systems is high, and the one-time investment is large.

Defects: The weld bead solidifies relatively quickly, and there may be defects such as porosity and embrittlement. Due to the large spatter, the weld seam of penetration welding is rougher than that of brazing, but its strength is much stronger than that of ordinary spot welding.

In summary, laser welding technology has many advantages, but there are also some limitations in practical applications. Therefore, when choosing a welding method, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the specific welding requirements and conditions.
